What to consider when selecting hearing protection solutions

When selecting personal hearing protectors, the PCBU should consider:

(1) The attenuation required for the task and exposure (based on Noise Assessment) and avoid over-attenuation, which can reduce audibility of speech and safety-critical sounds;

(2) Suitability for the work environment and tasks—e.g., earplugs may be impractical where hygiene is an issue, while earmuffs can be problematic in heat, confined/restricted spaces, or with helmets; and

(3) Wearer factors that drive compliance, including comfort, mass, and headband clamping force.

Find Hearing Protectors by Class Rating

Under AS/NZS 1270:2002, hearing protectors are assigned a Class rating from 1 to 5 based on their tested attenuation. Class 1 indicates the lowest level of noise reduction, while Class 5 indicates the highest.
