Discover ways to navigate complex colour applications

The evolution of paint colour and techniques continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the industry. Matching new challenging textures: Key strategies to implement now

Matching textures is a new challenge for painters. Undercoats, like rocker guard, once had uniform textures but now vary in texture across manufacturers. Topcoats need to match panel textures for invisible repairs. If the factory orange peel is rough, you'll need to spray to match that texture. Proper spray gun setup and masking techniques are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions About 3M Automotive Paint Spray Guns

  • Which spray gun should I use to spray a car?

Getting a smooth, even finish and avoiding rework is essential when painting a car. The 3M™ Performance Spray Gun is your platform to achieve this. Whether you are working in the car refinish area or in an industrial paint shop, a wide range of nozzles is available for different applications. Choose between pressurised nozzles and gravity feed spray guns - with large orifice sizes for higher viscosity paints or even primers down to small orifices for very fine atomisation as needed for clear coats.

  • How do I clean a spray paint gun after spraying?

The 3M™ Performance Spray Gun is easy to clean. Simply drain the paint from the nozzle, then rinse the nozzle with the appropriate solvent until it runs clean. Remove the nozzle from the gun, wipe the needle clean and air blow it dry. The gun body should never go into a spray gun cleaner. Cleaning is much quicker than with traditional spray guns as the paint only runs through the nozzle and not the whole gun.

  • What paint/coatings can I use with the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun?

The 3M™ Performance Atomising Heads on the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun allow you to easily spray a wide range of coatings - from stains and primers to topcoats and even adhesives. It can be used at every stage of the paint process, with interchangeable nozzles for fast changeovers.

  • What components or kit should I use with my 3M spray gun?

3M offers a range of extra components to help you get the most out of your 3M spray gun, including nozzles and tips, replacement parts and spray gun holders.

  • How long does each nozzle last?

Our recommended nozzle life equates to approximately 150-200 refinish hours. Assuming approximately 10 refinish hours for each job, each nozzle could be used for 15-20 jobs. The actual lifetime will be dependent on the application and use of the product.

  • How much pressure should I use and what settings should I use for coating applications?

The amount of pressure needed depends on which nozzle type you’re using. The HVLP nozzle operates at 1.4 bar inlet pressure, whereas the fine finish nozzles are 2.0 bar in pressure.

With the 3M™ Performance Spray Gun, you can apply most of the coating types typically used in a body shop. Generally, the operating pressure range is between 0.5 bar - 2.6 bar. Operating Pressure Range (OPR) is the inlet pressure range for safe function of the spray gun.

Important: Always refer to paint manufacturers recommendations.

  • What’s the advantage of a composite gun over a traditional metal spray gun?

The composed body of the 3M™ Performance Spray Guns are up to 50% lighter than conventional metal spray guns. They were optimised by kinesiologists for improved comfort and less operator fatigue.
