Frequently Asked Questions about 3M Safety Helmets

  • How do hard hats work?
An impact protection hard hat uses a rigid outer shell to help deflect impacts and an internal suspension system to absorb and spread force away from the head. The space between the shell and suspension helps reduce impact transfer, while the brim or design may also help protect against debris, splashes, or other workplace hazards.
  • When should hard hats be worn?
Hard hats should be worn whenever there is a risk of head injury from falling objects, flying debris, overhead hazards, low-clearance areas, or accidental contact with electrical hazards. They are an important form of head protection in workplace settings such as construction sites, industrial facilities, maintenance areas, and any location where site safety rules or hazard assessments require them.
  • How long do hard hats last?
Replace your hard hat regularly. Field testing shows that helmet shells generally have a hard hat service life of at least 3 years from the date of issue. Harness components may wear or deteriorate more quickly and should be replaced at least every 2 years.
  • How can you improve comfort when wearing a hard hat for extended periods?
Wearing a hard hat for long periods can affect hair comfort due to pressure, friction, heat, and sweat buildup, especially if the fit is too tight. To improve hard hat comfort, choose a properly adjusted hard hat, keep the sweatband clean, and ensure the suspension sits securely without excessive pressure.
