3M welcome Campbelltown TAFE students to training centre for bonding and plastic repair courses

Students from Campbelltown TAFE’s Autobody Repair attended the 3M Training Centre in Blacktown, NSW during August and September for an extensive program on bonding and associated applications.

The training program was conducted over two full days with the first dedicated to adhesive bonding and the second day focusing on plastic repair applications. The students participated in a classroom theory session in the morning followed by a hands-on practical session in 3M’s new panel shop facility in the afternoon.

As 3M’s adhesive bonding program is an I-CAR Australia accredited course, a further positive for both the apprentices and their employers is that they had an opportunity to gain valuable I-CAR accreditation for successfully completing the course.

    • The course was run by 3M Senior Technical Service Engineer, George Di Scala, who noted that 3M were approached by the TAFE to provide additional insight into this complicated area within the panel shop. ‘The modern-day panel beater has to deal with an ever-evolving world of automotive technology and an increasing use of different adhesives and applications, often led by AOEM specifications and guidelines. 3M are not only involved with creating these new innovative adhesives and plastic repair solutions, but work quite closely with the Automotive Manufacturers’ to meet their needs. It makes sense that we get in with apprentices and technicians and help them with learning in this area.

The response from both the students and the teachers has been incredibly positive with Daniel Nadalin, Panel Shop Teacher from Campbelltown TAFE commenting on the courses’ benefits. ‘It was fantastic to have the opportunity to attend 3M’s new state of the art training centre and provided an invaluable learning experience for the students,’ he said. ‘They were wrapped with the course and have passed this feedback onto their employers. I would like all future apprentices that study with Campbelltown TAFE to attend both the bonding and plastic repair course.’
