School Crossing Safety
Why are so many children involved in pedestrian accidents?
Research suggests that the small stature of children make it difficult
for them to see a traffic situation and also for drivers to see them.
Young children have not developed the ability to judge speed and direction
and many young children believe that the safest way to cross a street
is to run.
Where crossing to safety really counts
Each year many children are killed or injured in pedestrian accidents
on their way to or from school. A new colour - Fluorescent Yellow Green
- is now being used on traffic signs to draw special attention to pedestrian
crossings in school zones. This new colour has recently been specified
for all school zone signs by Queensland Transport and is also being
trialed in other states.
What can you do to alert drivers earlier?
Drivers need to be alerted to the problem of young children in traffic
with signs that are clearly visible during all day and night time conditions.
To better protect children, the new signs identifying school zones are
highly reflective as well as fluorescent giving
motorists more advance notice than is provided by the traditional yellow
signs. Fluorescent yellow green can also be used for advance warning
signs to warn drivers that they are approaching a school zone and for
school bus stop signs to more clearly identify locations where children
cross the street.
Protect them with the best available technology
Make sure your routes to school are marked by the latest technology
in traffic signs. Ensuring that fluorescent yellow green signs are installed
near your schools will result in an image that reflects a progressive
safety program and the way to greater safety for children in your community.
