Strapping
Management and prevention
of injuries
Strapping has been used in the
treatment, management and prevention of sports injuries
for many years. Studies have shown that taping is effective
in reducing such injuries as ankle sprain.(1)
Other studies have demonstrated that taping the ankle
may be more effective in the short term than bracing for
ankle injuries.(2)
Further studies have shown that the combination of taping
and bracing is helpful in knee injuries.(3)
Taping has also been shown to improve your balance and
reaction time if the injured ankle was strapped.(4)
Strapping sports injuries is appropriate
in two main areas:
Post injury
Preventative, either
following previous injury or to prevent any injury at
all
Post Injury
Once the injury has been appropriately
assessed and diagnosed then strapping may be used in conjunction
with compressive bandaging.
This will usually be part of the rehabilitation programme
performed by a health professional
Preventative
This can be done once the player
is returning to sport as part of the rehabilitation programme
or to prevent injury occurring in the first place. This
is common practice with American Gridiron teams and in
some rugby and netball teams in NZ and Australia.
