Injury Classification

Injuries can be classified by:
• Mechanism or cause of injury
• Type of tissue injured

Classification by Cause

Primary injury: results directly from the sporting activity

Secondary injury: results from earlier often inadequately treated injury

Primary Injury

Direct Injury: Results from external force. Eg collisions with other players equipment or ground. These can often be severe causing fractures, dislocations or ruptures of tendons or ligaments.

Indirect Injury: These are injuries due to over stretching, lack of fitness or fatigue. These injuries usually damage soft tissues like muscles and tendons as the forces are generated from within the body (internally).

Overuse injuries: results from inappropriate or excessive use of body parts.

This places strain on tissues greater than it can with stand and they subsequently break down.

Secondary Injuries

These injuries occur as a result of tissues healing poorly or previous injuries that were poorly treated. This can make re-injury more likely.
