PERMANENTLY BONDING AND SEALING WOOD AND FIBREGLASS

BondingBonding and sealing wood to fibreglass, portholes, deck fittings or mouldings requires a product having structural strength.

High performance and durability are important considerations in these types of applications; the bond or seal must be extremely strong and capable of retaining its strength above or below the waterline. Flexibility is also important to allow for dissipation of stress caused by shock, vibration, swelling or shrinking. For best results use 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 FC, a one-part moisture-curing polyurethane used for structural integrity.

APPLICATION
  • Make sure all surfaces are clean and dry.
  • Remove surface contaminants from fibreglass or gelcoat with Adhesive Cleaner.
  • Apply 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 FC to the seam or substrate to be bonded.
  • Bond the part together and remove the excess.
  • The adhesive will reach a tack-free state in 2 hours at 25°C/50% relative humidity and will cure completely in 1 day for a 4-6 mm bead.

Coverage per artridge is approximately 37 linear meters for a 3mm bead, 10 linear metres for a 5mm bead.

BONDING OR SEALING PARTS THAT REQUIRE FLEXIBILITY AND REMOVABILITY

Sometimes joints and boat hardware may need maintenance or replacement: sealing or bonding does not always need to be permanent..........

These joints require flexibility and appropriate adhesive strength to allow you to remove bonded parts at a later stage: 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 4200 FC is a one-component, moisture curing general all purpose polyurethane sealant which will give a flexible joint with good adhesion to wood, fibreglass, gelcoat, plastics and metals. It forms a watertight, weather-resistant seal on joints and boat hardware above or below the waterline.

Not recommended for deck caulking application.

APPLICATION

  • Make sure all surfaces are clean and dry.
  • Remove surface contaminants from fibreglass or gelcoat with Adhesive Cleaner.
  • Apply 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 4200 FC to the substrates to be sealed or joined.

The sealant will reach a tack-free state in 2 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity and will cure completely in approximately 1 day for a 4mm bead.
