"Black spot" Federal
Road Safety Initiative
Australia has developed a reputation as a country on the leading edge
of initiatives for road safety. Nevertheless, road accidents cost the
Australian community about $6 billion per annum.
The Federal Government has introduced a Road Safety Black Spot Program
as a strategic approach to addressing crash locations throughout Australia.
The Program provides funding of $36 million per annum to fix hazardous
locations on roads. Approximately 50 percent of its available funds
are allocated to sites in rural Australia. Remedial works covered by
this funding includes signage. Of all remedial works that can be undertaken
signage is one of the most cost effective.
There are many Black Spot locations that could be alleviated through
the use of larger and more effective signs, including the use of the
new durable fluorescent colours in the 3M™ Scotchlite™ Diamond Grade™
Reflective Sheeting ranges.
